Growing Number of Indonesian Regions State Online Casino Use is Spurring Divorce Wave

(AsiaGameHub) –   Various regions in Indonesia are reporting an increase in divorce rates, with judicial authorities asserting that the growth of online gambling is a primary factor in the breakdown of families.

The Tarempa Religious Court, which oversees civil matters in the Anambas Islands Regency, announced that it has finalized 33 divorce cases within the first four months of the year.

The court is currently managing an additional 60 active cases, the majority of which were filed by women. A significant portion of these filings reference online betting or debt from illegal lenders.

According to the Indonesian news outlet Batam Pos, the court indicated that the frequency of divorces is on a sharp upward trend.

Irma Zhafira Nur Shabrina Hajidah, a judge at the Tarempa District Court, noted that the numbers are “quite high, especially considering the relatively small population of Anambas.”

“Many families are currently facing financial hardship. While infidelity is a factor, it is not widespread; gambling remains the most common cause cited in divorce proceedings,” the judge explained.

The court has suggested that legislators provide improved education regarding family financial management.

Regional Reports: Online Gambling Triggers Surge in Divorces

Statistics from Bojonegoro Regency support the idea that divorces driven by online gambling are a national phenomenon.

The court reported that data from early 2026 shows women are now nearly 50% more likely than men to initiate divorce proceedings. Most of these women are under the age of 30, according to the Bojonegoro Religious Court via the news outlet Kabarpasti.

“A large number of women are choosing to separate because their husbands are failing to meet their financial duties due to an addiction to online gambling,” stated Sholikin Jamik, the court’s Chief Clerk.

The court attributed the rise to the “pressures of a digital lifestyle and a culture of instant gratification,” noting that financial literacy is a “fundamental element in sustaining a healthy marriage.”

Meanwhile, in Bogor Regency, data from the West Java Central Statistics Agency reveals that courts have overseen 175 divorce cases linked to online gambling this year.

According to the news outlet Pojok Bogor, the agency’s figures show that Bogor leads the region in divorce cases related to online casino use.

Cianjur Regency followed in second place with 102 cases, while Bandung Regency recorded 68 cases.

Threats to Family Stability

Other areas in West Java also reported significant figures, including Ciamis with 51 cases, Sumedang with 41, and Indramayu with 36.

Four additional regions in West Java documented more than 25 online gambling-related divorce filings so far this year.

“This trend demonstrates that the consequences of online gambling extend beyond economics; it also fractures family bonds,” a West Java official remarked. “It is a direct cause of marital dissolution.”

These reports align with similar grievances voiced by courts in regions such as Bungo Regency and Kendari, the capital of Southeast Sulawesi.
